First vet to secure military burial rights for same-sex spouse laid to rest in Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. – Lieutenant Colonel Linda Campbell was laid to rest at the Willamette National Cemetery Monday, becoming the first veteran to be buried beside her same-sex spouse.
Lt. Col. Campbell died last month of cancer.
After “serving in silence” by keeping her sexuality quiet in the military, she fought to secure military burial rights for her partner, Nancy Lynchild, who passed away in 2012.
Linda's fight to have Nancy interred at the Willamette National Cemetery reached the highest levels of government.
A short time later, same-sex couples won the right to marry in Oregon and across the nation.
