Army vet raising awareness for PTSD, veteran suicide by biking the U.S.
YAKIMA, Wash. -- A veteran, with a goal of biking to all four corners of America, is raising awareness for PTSD and veteran suicide is here in Yakima this week.
Eli Smith plans to meet city leaders, visit veterans in hospice and volunteer at a local mission. He started out walking in 2016, and now he bikes.
Smith does this strictly on donations. He describes how he changed one veteran’s life by raising enough money to buy him clothes and give him temporary shelter.
“He wanted to say thank you because I was able to get him that hotel room. He had an address. With the address he got a job, and he said, ‘I’m getting my own apartment in two weeks,” said Smith.
Smith said on average, about 20 veterans per day will commit suicide.
His next stop is Sunnyside and then he’ll be making his way to Kennewick.
