EUGENE, Ore. - BMX racers from around the country, and even Mexico and Canada, rode in the Gold Cup Regional Championship on Sunday morning.
It was the first time the final race was held in Eugene.
The competition ran three days, and Sunday alone, more than 500 racers competed.
“This is my first time ever getting this trophy, and I've never done the gold cup before so it's cool to win a new trophy,” 11-year-old trophy winner Joshua Trerise said.
There were 107 rounds of final competitions, divided by group and skill level, including all ages from three to 70 years old:
“My granddaughter got me involved in this sport a year ago. It's addicting and it's been great. I'm in the best shape of my life. I'll be 71 here in a couple months,” BMX racer John Fyre said.
Emerald Valley BMX track operator Jason Germyn, who hosted the event, said the first time was a success.
“We had a great time,” Germyn said. “We're hoping they'll come back next year and do the same thing, maybe even a national next time, we'll see what happens."
Germyn also competed and so did his daughter.
“It's great to see my daughter out there racing,” he said. “She's a second generation racer coming out. She loves it more than anything so it's great.”
Everyone we spoke to said they're drawn to the track for the same reasons.
“It's really fun. I like the atmosphere of all of the people and getting to meet new friends," Trerise said.
Now that the regional final is over, many riders, including the Trerises, are looking forward to the Canada Grand and USA Grand competitions.
