Report: Beavers to hire former QB away from Huskies as head football coach

Jonathan Smith

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The quarterback who helped lead Oregon State to an 11-1 record and a victory in the Fiesta Bowl in 2000 may return as head coach of the Beaver football team, the Oregonian/OregonLive reports.

Jonathan Smith quarterbacked for the Beavers from 1999 to 2001.

The 38-year-old is currently co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach of the University of Washington Huskies. He's been with the Huskies since 2014.

The Oregonian cites "sources close to Smith." The Associated Press has also confirmed the report.

Oregon State officials responded to local press inquiries with no comment - but added that the athletic department planned a press conference on Thursday.
