PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Lane County Commissioner Faye Stewart announced he's running for the U.S. Senate.

The Republican will attempt to win the May primary and then face Democratic incumbent Ron Wyden.

The Cottage Grove resident said Thursday he's running because "our citizens are broken and they need help." He says the federal government has neglected the needs of Oregon counties while running up debt and mismanaging natural resources.

Stewart is a member of the family that owned the Bohemia Lumber Co. during the 20th century. The firm was at one time the nation's leading producer of laminated wood beams.

His great uncle was L.L. "Stub" Stewart, the former state representative and president of Bohemia Lumber.

Wyden has won re-election by large margins since he was first elected to the Senate in 1996.
