HONOLULU, HI. (WSET) -- Two men who have been friends for over 60 years received the surprise of a lifetime.

KHON reports that Alan Robinson and Walter McFarlane were born and raised in Hawaii. They met one another in grade school.

"He was the partier. I never did any partying in high school," Walter said of Alan.

Within their friendship, the two shared a special bond. Walter never knew his father and Alan was adopted.

"I had a younger brother that I lost when I was 19, so I had never nieces or nephews and I thought I'd never know my birth mother, I'll never have any nieces or nephews," said Walter.

Walter began to search for his family ties for years through the use of the internet and social media. Unfortunately, he had no luck.

Instead, Walter took another route and sought out DNA matching websites.

"So then we started digging into all of the matches he started getting," his daughter Cindy said.

After his search, Walter saw that at the top of the list of DNA matches was the username ROBI737.

The results revealed that Walter and ROBI737 had several DNA matches and identical X chromosomes.

The catch: Alan's last name is Robinson.

"As a nickname, everyone called him Robbie. And he flew 737s for Aloha Airlines. He was a pilot," said Cindy.

It turned out that Alan had also used a DNA matching website to find answers about his family.

After a few phone calls, the friends learned that they shared the same birth mother.

"It was a shock," Alan shared.

"It was an overwhelming experience, and it's still overwhelming. I don't know how long it's going to take for me to get rid of this feeling," said Walter.

Now that the shocking news has set in, the brothers say they have plans to travel and enjoy retirement together.

"This is the best Christmas present I can ever imagine having," Walter said.
