Cargo fire shuts down all lanes of I-40 East near I-440

UPDATE: The crash is clear and all lanes have reopened.


A fiery crash has the right lanes of I-40 East near I-440 shut down right now.

Metro Police say the crash happened early Saturday morning around 2:40 a.m. Officers say a sedan on I-40 East near Clifton Avenue collided with a semi hauling gasoline.

Officers say the sedan flipped over and the cab of the tanker went off of an overpass, falling onto Clifton Avenue below. Police say the actual trailer remained on the interstate and burned until firefighters were able to put it out.

Though the accident was severe, the semi driver only has minor injuries. The driver of the sedan was not hurt.

The accident isn't expected to clear until 3 p.m.
