Stuff the Bus gets kids ready for back-to-school season

St. Vincent De Paul teamed up with the Southtowne Rotary Club to donate back to school items for children in low-income houses.

EUGENE, Ore. - With back-to-school season among us, members of the Southtowne Rotary Club, along with other volunteers, teamed up with St. Vincent De Paul to make sure kids from low income families have backpacks full of supplies they need.

They gathered at St. Vincent De Paul Society of Lane County's Lindholm Center for the "Backpacks for Back to School Drive," filling about 3,000 backpacks on Tuesday.

Las week, cash and supply donations from the community came pouring in for the "Stuff the Bus" fundraiser.

"Things that kind of help break this cycle of poverty, like getting kids excited about school, making sure they have all the things they need, is kind of a huge part of what we do," said Ashley Hensley, Community Engagement Coordinator. "Just be kind of more proactive than reactive."

Students will line up to pick up their backpacks on Wednesday.

Donations are still accepted throughout the school year at the St. Vincent Lindholm Center, 456 Highway 99 in Eugene. | MORE
