PORTLAND, Ore. – High school students from Oregon Connections Academy took a behind-the-scenes look at the Oregon Zoo Thursday.

It was part of a hands-on field trip.

Students had the opportunity to handle and train the animals alongside the zookeepers.

The academy is an online public charter school for kids around the state.

The school says it puts an emphasis on field trips to allow students to interact and learn in social settings.

“They can see kind of the bigger picture. They get together; they get to socialize; they meet friends and they get that ands-on experience and get to learn from some of the zoo employees here. So, it’s a great opportunity for them,” said Jessica Heisley, a science teacher at Oregon Connections Academy.

Students say the field trip was a lot of fun and they’re looking forward to more in the future.
