Group raises awareness in the name of veteran suicide and human trafficking

Dozens of local veterans hiked for 22 kilometers throughout Bakersfield on Saturday.

The number 22 represents the number of veterans who commit suicide every day in this country.

The veterans Silkies group made it their goal this year to raise awareness not only around veteran suicide but also human trafficking.

"The thought was, let's help out some of the other organizations around town and see if we can't use our influence to help them out, as well," said Eric Hansen.

The funds raised are being donated to the Kern Coalition Against Human Trafficking.

"Once you serve your country, you get out, you still have an obligation to bring people around you up to another level," said veteran Chris Salgado.
