Vision Zero: City of Eugene wants to eliminate traffic fatalities

The goal? Zero traffic deaths or serious injuries on Eugene streets, including pedestrians and bicyclists.

If may seem like an impossible goal to reach, but that's the fork in the road the City Council is taking after a vote held Wednesday.

"This came out of Sweden, and they set that goal for their country, and they're not there yet," said Rob Inerfeld, transportation planner with the City of Eugene. "They're moving in that direction."

The plan, dubbed Vision Zero, is an outgrowth of the Safer People, Safer Streets initiative launched last spring by federal transportation leaders.

Inerfeld said that between 2003 and 2012, an average of 6 people per year died in auto, pedestrian and bike crashes in Eugene.

A special task force will form early next year to lay out the map for Vision Zero and what may be changed.
