Veterans Day events begin Friday, continue all week in Lane County
FRIDAY, November 9
Veterans are invited to attend the Pleasant Hill High School Tribute to Veterans at 2:20 p.m.
There will be free pie and coffee after the event.
SATURDAY, November 10
The USDA Forest Service will waive fees at day-use recreation sites in Oregon and Washington Nov. 10 - 11 in honor of Veterans Day.
VETERANS DAY, Sunday, November 11
Ceremony in Springfield
The City of Springfield invites all veterans and community members to join in a Veteran’s Day Commemoration including Flag Detail provided by the Native American Honor Guard and a Wreath Ceremony led by the Young Marines. Speakers include Mayor and Navy Veteran Christine Lundberg and Colonel Connie Jenkins with the United States Air Force among others.
The event is 11 a.m. at the Springfield Oregon Veterans Plaza on the corner of Mohawk Boulevard and “I” Street in Springfield
Free admission to Oregon Coast Aquarium
The Oregon Coast Aquarium will honor veterans and active duty military personnel with free admission on Veterans Day. Normal admission price is $22.95 for adults.
Family members who accompany veterans to the Aquarium are eligible for a 10 percent discount. Families of active duty military personnel are also eligible for the discount, even if the person serving is not present.
To receive free admission on Saturday, November 11, visitors must show military or veteran organization identification, discharge papers or other official military identification; families of deployed military personnel must show active duty identification.
Free meal at Applebee's
Sunday Nov. 11, veterans can eat for free at Applebee's across the country. The restaurant says the free meals are part of its mission to serve one million meals to neighborhood military heroes on Veterans Day.
Free car wash
Veterans may visit New Image Car Wash at 526 Harlow Rd in Springfield, Ore, for a complimentary Express car wash between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. The company said veterans will only need to inform New Image verbally that they are veterans in order to receive their free car wash.
Discounts all month long at Willamalane
In observance of Veterans Day, Willamalane Park and Recreation District will provide discounts for all active duty and former military members at all of its facilities throughout the month of November.
Willamalane will offer a 50% registration discount on classes that occur in November as well as a $1 drop-in rate for open gym, fitness center, group exercise classes, lap swim, Exercise on Your Own, water fitness classes and waterpark/recreational swims at Bob Keefer Center, Willamalane Adult Activity Center, Willamalane Park Swim Center and Splash! at Lively Park.
To take advantage of this offer, individuals must present valid military ID or honorable discharge paperwork to Willamalane employees at the facility. Veterans must be present to redeem the offer. Some exclusions apply.
MONDAY, November 12
Denny’s invites veterans and military personnel to enjoy a free Grand Slam on Monday from noon to 5 a.m.
Lane Community College will be closed for the Veterans Day holiday on Monday, Nov. 12. No classes will be held and no services will be available
The University of Oregon will hold the annual Veterans Day Recognition Ceremony in the Erb Memorial Union ballroom. The event runs from 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m. and will include music, speakers and refreshments.
A flag display to honor veterans will be on view on the lawn of the Lillis Business Complex on the University of Oregon campus November 12 to November 16.
TUESDAY, November 13
Lane Community College will hold a veterans honor ceremony at 11:30 a.m. in the Parnell Center on Lane main campus, 4000 E. 30th Ave., Eugene. The ceremony will conclude with a luncheon for Lane students and employees who are veterans.
WEDNESDAY, November 14
Panel discussion for veterans and University of Oregon ROTC cadets, noon-1 p.m. at the Falling Sky Pizzeria and Public House in the EMU.
THURSDAY, November 15
The University of Oregon “Vets-giving” light lunch and dessert, open to UO veterans and the military-affiliated community, noon-2 p.m. in the EMU Student Veterans Center and presented by Peer Advisors for Veteran Education.
FRIDAY, November 16
The University of Oregon invites students and staff to wear red in honor active duty military on deployment. There will also be a lunch for veterans and military-affiliated members, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the EMU Student Veterans Center and hosted by the Veterans and Family Student Association.
