SPRINGFIELD, ore. -- A Springfield Police K9 is receiving a community award after his heroic acts last month.

You may remember Falko, the German shepherd who took down an armed suspect last month in Eugene on Coburg road and saving his handler's life.

Thursday, the Emerald Empire Kiwanis Club awarded him and his handler the Everyday Hero Award.

It was the first time in five years the club has presented the award.

"It’s amazing and it makes this job a lot more fun to do to know that the community backs you," Falko’s handler, SPD Officer Andrew Hargis.

Officer Hargis says Falko has been given more chew toys than he can handle - just in time for the holidays.
