Sheriff: Unidentified woman found dead in forest from apparent gunshot wound
ALSEA, Ore. - The death of a woman in her 20s found in a remote forested area appears suspicious, the Benton County Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies responded to the scene outside Alsea around 5 p.m. Monday. Security personnel had found the woman's body several miles up a logging road on property owned by Weyerhaeuser.
The unidentified white woman appears to be in her 20s, the sheriff's office said.
"A preliminary review indicates the death is suspicious pending a finding from the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office," the sheriff's office said.
According to Undersheriff Greg Ridler, it appears the woman died from a gunshot wound.
Ridler said investigators believe the death is recent. It possibly occurred over the weekend, but the weather is making it difficult to determine.
Ridler said their main focus right now is identifying the woman.
Investigators hope an autopsy will answer more of their questions.
The sheriff's office said there are no known missing persons cases that match this victim description. They don't think it's related to other suspicious deaths in the area.
