EUGENE, Ore. — Lane County Elections confirmed Tuesday that petitions contained enough valid signatures to initiate a recall election against Eugene City Councilor Claire Syrett.
According to the City Manager’s Office, Syrett has until August 5th to resign, but may also submit a statement of justification.
Because of the response deadline falling on a weekend, she may submit her statement of justification on Monday.
Syrett came under fire for her support of the city’s Moving Ahead plan, which would overhaul public transit and road construction in parts of Eugene.
Groups protesting the plan delivered signatures to the Eugene City Recorder in July.
The Moving Ahead plan was approved by the city council earlier in 2022, but it has been met with resistance over the impacts to traffic and local businesses.
Opposition groups to the plan say parts of River Road would see increased traffic congestion due to the renovations, and that LTD buses don’t carry enough passengers in the area to justify such changes.
Syrett has previously declined interviews regarding the recall effort against her, but issued a statement saying she would continue to serve the remainder of her term.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
