Police conduct death investigation near Portland State University campus
PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland police officers say one person was found dead near the Portland State University campus early Tuesday morning.
Officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 900 block of Southwest Montgomery Street at 12:54 a.m.
When they arrived, they found a deceased person lying on the ground. Campus Public Safety says the victim is not affiliated with Portland State University.
"There were these two men, they saw each other and they starting arguing in the street," said Jesse Johnsen, a student at PSU who witnessed the shooting. "Then both were shooting at each other. And well... one ran away, he got the other guy in the chest."
After a preliminary investigation, officers believe there was a disturbance prior to the shooting. Witnesses told officers they saw several people running from the location shortly after hearing gunfire.
Police found evidence of gunfire near the Subway restaurant in the area.
Portland Police Bureau homicide detectives conducted a death investigation. They won't release how the man died until after the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office conducts an autopsy.
So far, police have not arrested any suspects.
They do not believe there is any danger to the public. Portland State University confirms the victim did not attend the university.
Portland Police say they're seeking out any surveillance video from neighboring buildings.
Some of PSU's buildings were shut down for a brief amount of time as the investigation around the campus unfolded. But by Tuesday morning everything was back to normal on the campus, except for the students who lived right above the crime scene. Some of them were guided across the street by police so they did not compromise the investigation by stepping on any evidence.
"It's always difficult when senseless violence causes someone to lose their life," Johnsen said.
