SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - The motorcyclist who led Oregon State Police on a high-speed chase on Interstate 5 from Salem to Cottage Grove was booked into the Linn County Jail on Wednesday.

Police said Derek Allen Jones, 35, faces charges of reckless driving and felony attempting to elude police.

Other drivers first reported Jones near Salem. Troopers tried to pull him over, first as he passed through Albany and again in Springfield, as his speeds topped 100 mph, police said.

Cottage Grove Police were able to take him into custody more than 80 miles from where the chase began.

Lt. Vonn Schliecher said that, instead of keeping up with speeders, it's safer for troopers to monitor off-ramps or use spike strips.

"One of the things we were trying to avoid is having our troopers engaged with their patrol vehicles with speeds of over 100 mph, which is a big risk to the trooper themselves and to the general public," he said.

Schleicher said investigators don't know why Jones refused to stop.
