People pitch camp along Chambers Street in Eugene

Some of the people who stay in the area say they have seen negative gestures from vehicles passing by.

EUGENE, Ore. - A homeless camp has been growing on a Eugene sidewalk this week.

It can be found near the 400 block of Chambers Street.

Some of the people who stay in the area say they have seen negative gestures from vehicles passing by.

Eugene Police say illegal campers are given a 24 hour notice to vacate the area or they can be issued a more than $100 ticket.

However, police say they try to point them towards social services instead.

“We are used to dealing with campers in public rights-of-ways, some present a larger environmental hazard than others and some present a larger safety hazard usually to the campers than others,” Lt. Doug Mozan with the Eugene Police Department says.

Lt. Mozan says he doesn’t believe any notable crimes have been reported in the area.
