Officials investigating fire on Mt. Vernon Road in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Fire investigators are still looking into exactly what started a fire on Mt. Vernon Road that destroyed a Springfield house on Thursday morning.

Neighbors said they heard noise in the middle of the night, stepped out and saw the house covered in flames. The house was in a rural part of Springfield, and said to be abandoned. Fortunately, nobody was injured in the accident.

Battalion Chief Jeff Kronser says some of his beset firefighters saw a person drive away from the fire.

"What we do notice is the weather," said Kronser. "If it's more inclement, we end up with additional abandoned structures. People try and find alternate heating sources. We do notice an uptick around the time the weather starts getting colder."

Mt. Vernon Road was blocked off earlier this morning as crews battled the fire.
