Off-duty firefighter pulls man from Willamette River

EUGENE, Ore. - Jonathan Deininger found a man clinging to a tree limb after falling into the Willamette River near Valley River Center on Tuesday morning.

Deininger called 911 after finding the man at 10:23 a.m.

Then the 18-year firefighter-paramedic with Eugene Springfield Fire pulled the man from the river.

Medics took the man to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in stable condition, firefighters said.

The man's identity is not known. Firefighters described him as a man in his mid to late 30s.
