New 3D mammogram technology looks to reduce recall rate
LANE COUNTY, Ore. - New, 3-D mammogram technology has made its way to Lane County.
This one comes from Women’s Care in Eugene. Doctors say pain and fear are the top complaints during a mammogram. Some women even avoid the exam for those reasons.
But, then new SmartCurve System with 3-D imaging creates more comfort by distributing pressure, so pinching is reduced.
It also detects 20 to 65 percent more breast cancers compared to old technology, while taking less time to scan the patient’s breasts.
“We hope that it will decrease a recall rate, so a recall rate is when you it's the percentage of time that you have to go back and get further views,” OB-GYN Dr. Brooke Kyle says.
Dr. Kyle says women between 40 and 50-years-old should get a mammogram every one to two years, and women older than 50 should get an exam every year.
She says women with a family history of breast cancer may need to start screening earlier than this.
She also says women of all ages should do self-breast exams.
