EUGENE, Ore. - Friday is National Puppy Day, a day to celebrate our furry four-legged friends. But if you're considering adopting a puppy, Greenhill Humane Society has some advice for new owners.

Director of Operations Sasha Elliott says to make sure you and your home are ready for the added responsibility of a puppy. She says puppy need extra attention and require much more training than older dogs.

"Take a look at your activity level, take a look at how often you travel and how often you have visitors come to your home, and make sure that you're committed to training and socialization. The first few months of a puppies life are so formative to their development," Elliott says.

And whther you're getting a puppy or an older dog, Elliott says the personality of the dog matters, too.

It also matters whether you have other animals, or if you have children.
