Legislation to expand Ore. bottle bill advances

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - In a party-line vote, a House panel has approved a bill that would add new containers to the list of bottles eligible for redemption under Oregon's bottle bill.

House Bill 2184 would also increase the deposit from a nickel to a dime if the state does not meet its container return rate goals.

The 2007 legislature added water bottles to the list of containers that can be redeemed for a deposit. The bill approved Thursday by the House Environment and Water Committee would add bottled juice, tea, coffee and sports drinks to the list in 2013.

The bill now moves to the House floor for a vote.
