KLCC-FM is a step closer to its goal of moving to downtown Eugene

A Eugene public radio station is one step closer to making its move downtown.

This building at 8Th and Olive will be the new home for KLCC FM.

Construction work is just getting underway to turn this space into a radio station. Officials say KLCC has outgrown its cramped space on the Lane Community College campus, but that's not the only reason for moving to downtown.

Program Director Don Hein says the move is intended to get the station closer to the community, the listeners. Hein explains, "When we started talking about building a new station we went to the community and started talking about building something here on campus. And the community said gee, wouldn't it be great if you were downtown."

Outside grants and donations from listeners are covering the $1-million dollar project cost. Another fund drive is underway to try to raise over $2-million dollars for new equipment. Station officials hope to be broadcasting from the downtown location before the end of the year.
