It’s a busy week for parents and students as kids across the area head back to school.

Wednesday it was Eugene 4J and Springfield school districts that returned to class.

In the Springfield School District, K-6 and 9th grades started Wednesday.

And for Eugene, kindergarten, sixth and ninth grades started their classes.

"A lot of students on the road today, a lot more than usual,” said Robert Powers, a Springfield School District crossing guard, “so we've got to make sure we watch our speeds. Don't cross those school buses when their lights are on, and just look after the little ones. keep them safe."

Classes will resume for all the other grades in both districts on Thursday.

It's an exciting, and nerve-wracking time for parents as well as students.

“Yeah, we're ready to get back into the routine of school and we're not nervous for the kids, but I think they're a little nervous today,” said Allison McGowan, a parent of a Mt. Vernon Elementary student in the Springfield School District.

“Kids are nervous,” added parent Todd McGowan. “First day of school is always nerve-wracking.”

We also talked to some kids Wednesday morning as they were getting off the bus. We asked what they're looking forward to this school year.

“I'm looking forward to recess,” said one student.

“I hope I get to play soccer,” said another.

Now that school is back in session, drivers should give themselves extra time on their morning commute.
