EUGENE, Ore. - Students, faculty and police are safe after a fatal shooting outside Cascade Middle School in the Bethel School District in Eugene.

A suspect has been shot and killed by an officer, Eugene Police said. Police confirm that the suspect has been pronounced dead.

"No students have been injured," Lt. Jennifer Bills with Eugene Police said. "The Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team will be coming to take over this investigation."

Bills initially said the shooting happened inside the building. As the investigation continued, Lt. Doug Mozan clarified that the shooting took place outside the school building.

Parents should stay home, Bills said. You can contact your child by phone or text, she said.

The school was on lockout. No one will be allowed inside. Students are locked inside their classrooms.

The school district said students would be released at 3 p.m. and announced a designated pickup area for parents.

Multiple police units are on scene at Cascade Middle School in west Eugene.

"We got a report of a dispute here at the school. Officers arrived and were dealing with a suspect," Bills said.

The involvement of the Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team is routine when an officer uses deadly force. Under Oregon law, IDFIT investigates all uses of potentially deadly force by police, whether or not the action proves fatal.

The identity of the suspect and the officers involved are not yet known.
