Man hands out $600 to kids, receives backlash on Facebook
What started as a well-meaning gesture turned into hurtful comments on a local Facebook page.
In an effort to spread holiday cheer, one man decided to give out $600 worth of $20 bills to children at the Wal-Mart in Yreka. He says the gesture was all about giving kids a nice Christmas surprise.
Afterwards, he took to the Siskiyou County Grapevine Facebook page to inform skeptical parents that his actions were meant with the best intentions.
Instead, he was met some negative comments that claimed he was boastful for posting about his good deeds.
"It wasn't about that. I mean, this is Christmas," said Montana Hendricks, the man who gifted the money. "You're going to sit there and waste your time trying to find the negative in the smile of a child."
Hendricks says he just wanted to give local kids a reason to smile, and never intended for the post to blow up.
As of Monday, that Facebook post had over three hundred reactions.
Many of the negative comments that said he only created the post for attention have been removed.
