Fire destroys home on Spencer Butte, fills sky with smoke

EUGENE, Ore. - A fire destroyed a home on the flanks of Spencer Butte, putting a plume of smoke up into the air over the South Hills of Eugene on Thursday.

Firefighters raced to the scene, and a firefighting helicopter dropped water on the flames.

The fire was knocked down before 2 p.m. Firefighters remained on scene to monitor for embers.

There is no word yet on what started the fire.

Police said the home is located on the northeast face of Spencer Butte in the 32000 block of Fox Hollow.

Fox Hollow Road will remain closed south of Donald Street and north of the Fox Hollow trailhead for the Ridgeline Trail to facilitate firefighter traffic.
