EUGENE, Ore. - Firefighters responded to a grass fire near the University of Oregon campus on Thursday that forced people to evacuate buildings in the Campus Operations area.

The fire damaged an outbuilding and several utility poles as it burned along the railroad tracks for about 500 feet.

Battalion Chief Brian Smith said he called in additional units after arriving on scene. In the hot, dry conditions, the fire put up a lot of smoke, Smith said.

But the fire was near a paved area that acted as a fire break, helping firefighters control the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Smoke from the fire was visible from the Weather Cam Network.
