Eugene-Springfield Special Olympics team competes at Summer State Games
CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Aaron Stebans took home the bronze in long jump for the Eugene-Springfield Special Olympics team this weekend in Corvallis.
The 2017 Summer State Games for Special Olympics Oregon were held this weekend at Oregon State University.
Stebans participated in multiple events, including the 1500 meters, 4x4 relay and long jump.
"I like it; it’s fun, I like running in the heat,” said Stebans.
Athletes from all counties came together to have fun and compete for medals.
"We are here to compete and they are athletes, and they are in competition. We got lots of ribbons, lots of smiles going home and that is what matters,” said Mary Popish, assistant coach for the Eugene-Springfield Special Olympics Team.
The Olympics brought friendships and relationships together.
“This environment provides opportunity for connections in so many different ways," said Popish.
There was over 1,600 athletes competing Sunday, with over 2,000 volunteers over the span of the 3-day competition.
The next big competition for the Special Olympics will be the 2018 USA Games in Seattle, Washington.
