EUGENE, Ore. — Eugene Police say a chaotic scene in downtown Eugene in the early hours of Sunday morning led to multiple firearms being seized from multiple people.
Shortly before 2:00 a.m. Sunday, October 9, extra patrol units and the Street Crimes Unit were staffed downtown in an effort to curb increasing issues with gun violence downtown, say police.
Three males were seen wearing in the downtown area wearing gloves and masks. At least one was seen with a handgun.
Shortly thereafter, nine people with gloves and masks and multiple handguns were seen.
EPD says patrol units were deployed to prevent a potential shooting incident. When the individuals became aware of police, they ran in all directions. Multiple suspects were detained, with multiple handguns located.
Another group of three additional, armed suspects were located in a parking garage. One suspect raised his shirt when security shined a light on him, showing a firearm in his waistband. EPD responded and located several guns, including one stolen handgun.

It was a chaotic scene but officers remained calm throughout the dynamic incidents.
In total, EPD units located six firearms from two different groups of people.
It is believed the two groups of people were searching for each other and were only blocks away when police intervened. Investigators believe police intervention may have prevented a potentially dangerous conflict that could have endangered the involved people as well as residents and visitors to the area.
Five people were arrested:
