DEXTER LAKE, Ore. - A child was injured and a boat was destroyed after it caught fire on Dexter Lake Sunday afternoon.
Lowell and Dexter fire departments responded to a call of a water rescue around 2:15 p.m. But when they arrived, they found a boat engulfed in flames and a family safely on shore.
According to Lowell Fire Chief Heith Hoehn, a father and mother and their two children where on the boat when the fire started.
Several boaters helped the family get to shore.
Lowell emergency personnel transported the child to RiverBend hospital in Springfield for treatment. Hoehn said the injuries were not life-threatening.
Dexter Fire and Rescue towed the embers of the boat to shore.
Harshbarger said it began sinking into the shallow water once it was near shore. A tow truck will remove it from the lake.
Harshbarger reminds the public to thoroughly check the blowers and pumps on boats before taking them on the water.
