Death of convicted rapist investigated as homicide
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - The man found dead Monday as a result of a possible homicide was a registered sex offender who pleaded guilty to second degree rape in 2003.
Police found Leonard Gordon Johnson II, 71, dead at a Mill Street apartment Labor Day afternoon.
His death is being investigated as a homicide.
Johnson was charged in October 2003 with two counts of Rape in the Second Degree and two counts of Sodomy in the Second Degree, according to court records.
He pleaded guilty to one county of Second Degree Rape in November 2003. A judge sentenced him to the mandatory minimum prison sentence of 75 months in December of that year.
According to Oregon Revised Statute 163.365, "A person who has sexual intercourse with another person commits the crime of rape in the second degree if the other person is under 14 years of age."
Police have not released many details about the case.
Springfield Police initially responded to the call of a dead animal Monday around 2:30 p.m. on the 400 block of Mill Street. There was a heavy police presence in the area Monday afternoon as policed asked neighbors if they had any information on the body.
On Tuesday, forensics investigators and Springfield Police remained on scene and continued to question people who live at the apartment complex. Crime tape closed off a dirt area next to the building.
