Cruise ship docks in Coos Bay for first time

Silver Sea Cruise docked their charter ship on Monday, part of a luxury golfing cruise for people to check out the Bandon Dunes.

COOS BAY, Ore. - Coos Bay has a visitor, and it has many people wondering what took so long.

Silver Sea Cruise docked their charter ship on Monday, part of a luxury golfing cruise for people to check out the Bandon Dunes.

It's a smaller ship, with less than 300 passengers and crew members, but it's still a great boost for local tourism and the economy. The director of the Visitor and Convention Bureau explains that Coos Bay doesn't have a dock with direct access to restaurants and transportation.

"We are a more commercial port area for the big shipping companies as opposed to a tourism, cruise type destination," said Janice Langlina.

A typical 3,000 seater ship would need a stationary cruise-type dock, and the Coos Bay boardwalk is a floating dock.
