EUGENE, Ore. - Crews will demolish some of the old buildings at the Eugene Civic Stadium site to make for the a new community recreation complex, a representative of the Eugene Civic Alliance said.

An arson fire ignited by a group of preteen boys destroyed the historic wooden ballpark. The alliance had hoped to renovate the facility.

The new plan is to build a 45,000 to 60,000 square foot field house, complete with basketball courts.

The property will also include a full-size soccer field with space for spectators.

That facility "which will play home to some of our local teams like soccer and football and pickle ball," said Bev Smith with Kidsports and the Eugene Civic Alliance. "It will be a community rec center accessible for all."

Smith said the alliance hopes to start construction as early as 2018.

They also plan to continue to celebrate the spirit of the old Civic.
