BROOKINGS, Ore. — The Coast Guard medically evacuated an ill crew member off a commercial fishing vessel 10 miles west of Brookings Wednesday afternoon.

A boat crew aboard a 47-foot Motor Life Boat from Station Chetco River safely conducted the medevac of the 59-year-old chief engineer aboard the fishing vessel Alaska Ocean, and transported him to shore for further medical care, the Coast Guard reports.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Bend received notification of the ill engineer from a crew member aboard the Alaska Ocean at 1:56 p.m.

The engineer reportedly suffered a sudden loss of vision and anxiety. The sector’s flight surgeon recommended an immediate medevac, so the 47-foot MLB crew was launched to assist.

The current condition of the ill man is unknown.

The Alaska Ocean can continue to operate as it had another crew member holding a chief engineer certification aboard the vessel, the Coast Guard said.
