Bear crosses 30th Avenue in Eugene in traffic

Michele Pulliam saw this bear Sunday afternoon as the animal crossed 30th Avenue above the golf course.

EUGENE, Ore. - A driver almost hit a bear on 30th Avenue Sunday.

Michele Pulliam said she saw the bear around 2 p.m. near where 30th overlooks Laurelwood Golf Course.

Residents and postal workers saw a bear in a nearby neighborhood last week.

The bear is also suspected of pawing through garbage cans set out to the curb in front of homes in a neighborhood between 30th and Spring Boulevard.

Residents have reported seeing bears and cougars this month, in addition to the usual urban mix of turkey and deer.

A state biologist said the bears will likely head for the hills as berries fruit next month. The cougars are following prey - like deer and turkey - into areas where wildlands meet the edge of urban development.
