Aggressive crowd surrounds officers in downtown Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. – An aggressive crowd in downtown Eugene surrounded police officers after they attempted to arrest a person involved in a possible drug sale Friday afternoon.

According to the Eugene Police Department, police were in the park blocks in downtown Eugene monitoring drug activities at 3:24 p.m. The officers said they observed a possible drug sale.

Police approached the two individuals they saw engage in the transaction. One person cooperated, but the other began to fight the officer.

The officers used a Taser and pepper spray.

Police say a small crowd began to surround the officers.

Bystanders said the crowd was belligerent and aggressive.

The officers decided to vacate the park after one officer received a minor injury and the crowd dispersed.

Police say 28-year-old Preston Scott Hancock was cited for Possession of Greater than an Ounce of Marijuana.

Another man was taken to jail. Police charged Jeffery Don Walton, 29, with Resisting Arrest and Interfering with Police.

Police say they officers were monitoring drug activity in the area after they made drug arrests related to LSD and hash oil in the park blocks last week.
