EUGENE, Ore. - A local volunteer organization you may have seen around town wielding burritos hit a milestone this weekend.
After five years of service, the Burrito Brigade is ringing in the new year in a big way. They're expected to reach 150,000 meals by the end of the weekend.
Volunteers cook up burritos every Saturday and Sunday because it's an easy, nutritious meal on the go.
That means they've been feeding more than 700 homeless in Eugene every single weekend.
“On Saturdays we would give a lot of burritos to people during Saturday Market and that kind of just translated to those burritos then just went to those at the Camp 99,” said Jennifer Denson. “For example, 120 burritos went to Camp 99 today.”
The group passes out meals at the Egan Warming Center, St. Vincent de Paul and most recently, Camp 99.
They plan to try and double the amount of burritos they give out by the end of next year.
