PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) – A group of American heroes received a warm welcome home Sunday as they arrived from an unforgettable trip to the nation’s capital.

The 43 World War II veterans made the trip through Honor Flights, a program offering them a free four-day trip to Washington D.C. to tour the memorials and monuments.

“It was like a big family reunion,” said Hugh Keavney, a Navy veteran. “We put flowers out for the unknown soldier, and that was one of the most tremendous things I’ve ever seen.”

The vets were met with cheers and a truly heartfelt "thank you for your service" when they arrived home at PDX. Oregon Senator Ron Wyden was in attendance to greet the Honor Flight attendees when they landed back home.
