Did you or someone you know serve aboard the USS Intrepid?

Over 50,000 sailors served on the aircraft carrier during it's 31-year career. Of them, 270 lost their lives.

Now on the eve of the 75th anniversary of the commissioning of the Intrepid, crew members have put out a call for veterans to join them this August for the 75th Commissioning Anniversary Celebration Weekend.

The Intrepid was commissioned in 1943.

The carrier and its crew fought in World War II, surviving 5 kamikaze attacks and a torpedo strike.

The carrier picked up astronauts during the early years of spaceflight, serving as the NASA recovery vessel for Mercury and Gemini missions in the 1960s.

Before being decommissioned in 1974, the Intrepid served three tours in Vietnam and conducted surveillance in the North Atlantic during the Cold War.

The Intrepid became the centerpiece of the floating Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, established in 1982 in Hudson Bay in New York City.

That's where the 75th anniversary celebration will take place August 16 to August 19.

"The Museum is also accepting donations of personal artifacts and memorabilia from former crew members and their families," according to a statement. "Each item added to the Museum’s collection helps express and interpret Intrepid’s stories of service, and serves to educate and inspire more than one million visitors each year."

Former crew members and their families can visit www.intrepidmuseum.org/75 or email fcm@intrepidmuseum.org to learn more about the celebration.
