A double amputee soldier from D.C. is dead after going paddle boarding on the Chesapeake Bay near Annapolis Wednesday, according to authorities.

Maryland Natural Resources Police say 25-year-old Cody Iorns of D.C.died after he had a medical emergency while paddling off Tolly Point on the Chesapeake Bay near the mouth of the Severn River. Iorns was an Army specialist who served as a field medic before he lost both his arms in a motorcycle accident in 2015.

Authorities say Iorns was with three friends when he fell off his board and they turned around and saw him face down in the water and that his life jacket did not inflate. Iorns's friends took him to shore and tried to use CPR to revive him before emergency crews got to the scene. He was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Iorns was part of the paddle boarding company Capital SUP Annapolis, who said in a statement that they are shocked and saddened at his passing.

"Please pray for Cody’s family. We are at a loss for words," they said in a Facebook post. "He was our brother. He was an inspiration to everyone on and off the water."
