Joey Harrington launches scholarship fund for Oregon students
Joey Harrington wants to help send Oregon students to college.
The former NFL and University of Oregon quarterback has launched a new scholarship fund. The fund is called the Oregon Community Quarterback Scholarship.
Despite the name, this scholarship is not based of academic or athletic performance. The scholarship is need-based and is judged on the applicant's dedication to community.
"We want people who are going to be community leaders," said Harrington. "The quarterback is considered the leader of the football team but we want people that are leaders in the community."
The Harrington Family Foundation is offering four, four-year renewable scholarships for $2,500. Oregon high school students who plan to attend an Oregon university, college or trade school are eligible.
The deadline to apply for the scholarship is April 14.
The scholarship also includes a mentorship opportunity. Harrington has gathered leaders from a variety of professional fields including architecture and finance to help mentor scholarship recipients.
"No matter where these kids come from they will have somebody, they'll have a mentor that can help guide them along the way, that's the part I'm really excited about," said Harrington.
Harrington says he wants to invest in kids early so that they will invest their time and education in Oregon. He hopes to grow the scholarship fund over the years to eventually be able to provide recipients with full scholarships.
