West Albany loses heartbreaker against Jefferson
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) Victor Sanders, Kadeem Strickland and Devaunte Paschal each had 12 points for Portland's Jefferson in a 55-52 victory over West Albany in quarterfinal at the OSAA Class 5A boys tournament on Wednesday. The win extended the Democrats' winning streak to 15 straight games.
Jalen Schlegel had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs, who hadn't been to the state tournament since 1991.
West Albany (18-8) took a 50-48 lead on a 3-pointer by Nate Sherwood with 1:12 left, but Paschal answered with a jumper and a free throw to give the Democrats back the lead for good.
David Shedrick has 19 points and Malik Morgan added 18 to lead Churchill to an 82-61 victory over Sandy in a quarterfinal at the OSAA Class 5A boys tournament on Wednesday.
The top-ranked Lancers (23-4) will face Mountain View (22-3) in the semifinals on Friday at Matthew Knight Arena. The fourth-ranked Cougars defeated Wilsonville 49-39 to advance.
Third-ranked Silverton (22-4) will play No. 2 Jefferson (22-4) in the other semifinal.
Churchill trailed only briefly at the start, and led by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter when Mogan's layup made it 70-43.
Forward Justin Adams had 18 points and 17 rebounds for eighth-ranked Sandy (19-8), which was making its first tournament appearance since 1988.
Mountain View, which has never won a state title, was led by Grant Lannin with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Ryan Walsh has 10 points for No. 11 Wilsonville (18-9), which upset fifth-ranked Redmond to advance to the quarterfinals for the fifth straight season.
Wilsonville led by as many as 11 points in the second quarter after Zach Malvar's 3-pointer made it 20-9. Mitch Modin's layup pulled Mountain View into a tie at 26, and Lannin's jumper put the Cougars in front for good.
Zach Gengler had 22 points and 15 rebounds in Silverton's 55-47 victory over Milwaukie, which extended the Silver Foxes' winning streak to 18 in a row.
Jazz Johnson finished with 13 points for the Mustangs, the runners-up in the tournament last year.
Silverton held the lead for most of the way but extended it by 10 points late in the fourth quarter when Joe Schaefer made a free throw to put the Silver Foxes up 55-45 with 12 seconds left. Tre'shann Stone hit a jumper for Milwaukie and the final margin.
