Story time with Sheldon's Jim Fryback

The Sheldon Irish will play for the 6A state baseball championship against Clackamas on Saturday at 5:00 in Keizer, SHS last made a title appearance on the diamond in 1966. Assistant coach Jim Fryback was there as a player for Sheldon in '66.

Fryback chatted with KVAL Sports about that '66 team (4-2 loss to Hillsboro at Multnomah Stadium where Fryback painfully remembers making the last out during his sophomore year.) He also recalls his younger days helping his father keep the horses off the field.

That '66 team was coached by Mel Krause, of Oregon baseball fame.

After three head coaching stints in basketball at Springfield, Saturday will be Fryback's first taste of a championship from the dugout as an assistant.

He was the head coach of the Irish in 2001 when they were one out from the title game before Lakeridge came back to beat them in the semifinals and eventually won it all.
