Shedrick and Morgan power Churchill boys into 5A semis
EUGENE, Ore. -- Using last season's early exit from the playoffs as motivation, the Churchill Lancers beat Sandy 82-61 at Matt Knight Arena on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lancers were led by juniors David Shedrick and Malik Morgan, who scored 19 and 18 points respectively.
Churchill was up by four points in the second quarter when it went on a 12-2 run to close out the half and lead 43-29 at the break.
"I'm not going to lie," said Emanuel Morgan. "We were all nervous at first, but once we got into our little groove, we just took off from there."
Last season Churchill was upset as a number two seed in the quarterfinals, falling to Wilsonville 48-40.
The Lancers then lost to Mountain View in their first consolation game, going 0-2 at Matt Knight.
They say they were determined this year to not let that happen again.
"You know we came it with pressure on us," said Shedrick. "We're the number one team in the state, we need to get the win and get it in a good fashion.
"We tried to knock that pressure off our shoulders and get that win."
Churchill will face Mountain View again though, this time in the semifinals on Friday at 3:15.
The Cougars beat Wilsonville on Wednesday 49-39.
