SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The biggest game in the state took place in Springfield Friday night. No. 3 Churchill took on No. 2 Springfield.
In the first quarter, the Lancers were hot from the start. Lucas Wilson scored a three-pointer and Churchill was up 17-5.
In the second quarter, the Millers tried to cut down that lead. Nick Ah Sam scored from beyond the arc. The Lancers’ lead was down to seven.
But Churchill ended the half strong. Wilson went to the basket and got fouled along the way. The Lancers were up 29-19 at the half.
The Millers faced an uphill battle in the second half. Ah Sam scored a layup over 6’ 10” Spencer Hoffman.
Churchill was still up by 12 going into the fourth quarter.
The Lancers didn’t give it up. They secured the 60-53 win. Churchill is now at the top of the Midwestern League.
Wilson was relieved with the win on the road.
“We wanted that sixth league title. That was something we were chasing for. That was a goal of ours this year, and we felt like this was a must-win game for us, very important. These guys, these guys are like my family. We win as a family; we lose as a family. We get stronger as a family, and that's what we're doing, getting stronger. We feel good,” he said.
Churchill improves to a 18-4 overall season record. They face Marist on Tuesday.
