Freshman javelin thrower is making national waves in Douglas County

Freshman javelin thrower is making national waves in Douglas County (SBG).

WINSTON, Ore. - A student at Douglas High School in Winston is making noise in national and state track and field circles.

It was no surprise to 14-year-old freshman MacKenzii Phillips when she won the state javelin title over the weekend. She's also second in the nation.

"Everyone says that, 'MacKenzii is like, the most athletic person, and she's going to the Olympics,' and all that stuff," said Phillips.

While Phillips is making it look easy, she says that there's more to javelin than just throwing a stick, though she's looking to improve her form over the next three years.

"It's a lot of form and technique, and you have to have so much muscle mass in order to not hurt yourself," said Phillips. "I've been throwing far with it so it's okay, but if I get my form down, then I'll definitely be throwing further."

For Phillips, little of this could be possible without her support system, she says.

"School mates and everything, all of my friends and family," said Phillips. "They're just really supportive, and the community is too."

Phillips is aiming high, and has her sights set on the Olympics in the future, to continue representing Douglas County on the podium.
