EUGENE, Ore. - Small companies that produce University of Oregon logo gear are relieved the Ducks dumped a plan to limit trademark contracts to those firms paying over $500,000 in royalties per year.
John Henzie at Triangle Graphics in Eugene, which pays about $20,000 in royalties to the UO, said the changed would have wiped out a quarter his business - and taken a chunk of his employees with it.
McKenzie SewOn in Springfield is also relieved that Oregon plans to stick with the existing policy. The company has tried to diversify among different schools and products.
Matt Dyste, the UO marketing director, said a committee reviewed the proposals and decided a change wouldn't benefit the university.
He added that the goal wasn't to squeeze out smaller companies.
