EUGENE, Ore. - Fans cheered loudly as the South Eugene Axemen (12-9) defeated the Willamette Wolverines (7-11) Saturday night at Kuch's Court in South Eugene.
The game started off strong for both teams, but South maintained a lead at the end of each quarter throughout the game. The Wolverines put up a good fight but weren't a match for the Axemen.
At halftime, the Axemen were up 34-25. They were able to finish the game strong, winning by 23 points.
Key players of the night for the Axemen included Eli Lininger, Kirk Bassett, Casey ChubbFertal, Mason Green-Richards and Sean O'Neil.
South Eugene's head basketball coach Dave Hancock said compared to the two games South played earlier this week against Churchill and Marist, the win against Willamette was exactly what the purple and black needed.
"We played in spurts, I thought," Hancock said. "I thought we finished the game well today. The two games earlier this week, we didn't finish the games well."
Currently, the Axemen are 4-2 in league and have the chance to win the league outright if they win their last two games.
"That's really what we're working for," Hancock said.
South Eugene Axemen play Thurston in a league game Tuesday at the Purple Pit, and the Willamette Wolverines play Springfield Tuesday.
